Feelings are the conscious or subconscious experiences that something is happening in and around you. It is the experience of a change process and this change may either be emotional (sad, excited, aggressive, happy, disgusted, or fear) or physiological (like changes in the body’s hormones, brain’s chemicals, hunger, or need for something).
Points to be noted:
Feelings are NOT emotions
Feelings are NOT a sensation
Feelings are NOT perception
Feelings are NOT cortical brain activity
Instead, these are the experiences of the aforementioned psycho-physio-social changes within one’s body or around the body.
Examples:
Feeling hungry (feeling of empty due to hunger motivation; here feeling is related to the need for food)
Feeling confident (feeling of an inflated sense of worth just after you topped in the final exam; here feeling is related to the personal abilities and success)
Feeling of mild headache in front of an illusion (feeling of the certain zig-zag pattern; here feeling is related to the visual sensation/perception)
Feeling of drowsiness and losing just after the high time party with alcohol (feeling of low brain activity, poor decision making, and lower concentration; here feeling is related to the physical cause)
